Peace & Quiet Nature Hotel, Swedish Lapland

At the edge of the world, where the forest gives way to tundra and silence becomes a presence of its own, lies Peace & Quiet Nature Hotel — now part of the Metsa curated collection.

Hidden deep in Swedish Lapland near Jokkmokk, on the fringe of the UNESCO-listed Laponia wilderness, this is not a place you simply arrive at. You earn it. And the hotel experience starts right at the airport because you can get to the hotel by dog sled across frozen plains, by snowmobile through silent forests, by boat along still waters, or on foot along narrow trails. The journey strips things away, one layer at a time, until only the essential remains.

And then — you arrive. Stillness here is far from emptiness. It is full of crackling fire, distant wings cutting through Arctic air, the soft rhythm of huskies breathing beside you and of a lake so clear it feels untouched by time.

Stay inside the landscape

The rooms at Peace & Quiet are not rooms in the traditional sense. They are placed, almost gently, into nature.

Glass goahtes — inspired by traditional Sámi dwellings — dissolve the boundary between inside and out. You don’t look at the landscape because you live inside it.

The Floating Glass Room rests directly on a still lake, surrounded by ancient pine and spruce along the Lule River. In winter, it becomes part of the ice. In summer, you step straight into the water. Higher up, the Mountain Glass Room opens wide views across snow-covered forests and rolling peaks. And above it all, the Flying Glass Room hovers between forest and sky, where horizons stretch endlessly in every direction.

At night, if the sky decides to move, the Northern Lights arrive quietly. No need to step outside. Just watch.

Days that move you. Also literally.

Winter here is not passive, it pulls you out.

Imagine snowshoeing through untouched terrain, following a mountain guide on skis across vast white silence, drilling through ice and waiting for the subtle tension of a catch. Track wildlife — moose, reindeer, Arctic birds — moving through landscapes that feel older than memory.

And when you want to slow it down, cold water immerses under an open sky for breath, body and stillness.

Summer, on the contrary, shifts everything. The lake opens and you swim, kayak, drift. Trails stretch endlessly through Laponia, and the midnight sun refuses to let the day end. This is also one of the most reliable places in Europe to witness the Northern Lights — not as a lucky accident, but as part of the rhythm of staying here.

By the Vaikijaur river, an outdoor wellness space blends seamlessly into the surroundings. A Siberian sauna tent, forest bathing, massage by the water, yoga on ice, and a hot tub under the open sky. Always outside.

Gastronomy that is shaped by the land

Food here doesn’t try to impress. It simply is because it is made of local delights - reindeer, wild game, freshwater fish, cheeses from rare Nordic breeds, mushrooms and berries gathered from the forest, pine syrups with flavours you don’t quite recognise, but remember. Meals unfold slowly, often over open fire.

Evenings bring a three-course experience that feels both refined and deeply rooted. Mornings begin with warm Gáhkku — Sámi flatbread — served with cured reindeer, butter with bite, yoghurt from mountain cows, and berries that only grow this far north. Everything comes from here. Or very close to it.

People behind the story

Jokkmokk is one of the cultural hearts of the Sámi people and the story of Peace & Quiet is deeply personal. Built by Björn, a mountain guide shaped by the Alps, and rooted in Sámi heritage through his late wife Anna-Maria, the hotel lives within the culture rather than observing it. Their daughters grow up with reindeer, seasons, and stories.

Guests are not spectators or simply someone who passes by. You can join in reindeer gatherings, traditional rajd journeys, evenings by the fire, listening to stories carried across generations - like the family does. This is not a curated culture experience for you, it is lived with you.

Off-grid. Deep in one of Europe’s last truly untouched landscapes. A place where silence is not the absence of something — but the presence of everything that matters. This is exactly why Metsa exists - together with local gems like Peace & Quiet Nature Hotel.
